Top Trails: Northern California’s Redwood Coast
At last there is a definitive guidebook for the magnificent and beautifully mysterious hikers' paradise known as the Redwood Coast of Northern California. In this new title in the venerable Top Trails series from Wilderness Press, veteran outdoors author Mike White leads day-trippers and backpackers into some of the most awe-inspiring terrain on earth.
Step-by-step in his trail-worn boots, the author created a menu of 57 diverse routes, from a gentle half-mile morning loop, to a 29-mile backpack adventure. Winding through Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte counties, he guides readers into this sea- and landscape of:
Lush, old-growth redwoods, some nearly 400 feet high, that cast a cathedral effect above fern-carpeted forest floors;
Picture-postcard vistas to Pacific Ocean sea stacks, dazzling sunsets, and migrating whales;
Winding descents to undisturbed beaches and mesmerizing tide-pool life;
Pathways to inland canyons tinged with the ghost of ocean fog hitching rides on rugged streams;
Untamed wilderness shy on humans but boisterous with herds of Roosevelt elk.
Not only does Top Trails: Northern California's Redwood Coast provide Mike White's compelling and informative narrative based on seasoned personal experience, but it also includes:
Detailed, easy-to-follow maps;
A format designed for quick reference on the trail;
Appealing icons to signal "must-see" trail features;
GPS waypoints;
At-a-Glance tables spotlighting trail uses (horses or backpacking in addition to hiking); trail type (loops, out-and-backs, point-to-points); terrain hallmarks (mountains, summits, waterfalls); flora & fauna (wildlife, old-growth trees, ocean views); and trail features (photo opps, historic interest, camping);
"Don't get lost" trail milestones;
Back-of-book appendices on Top-Rated Trails; Campgrounds, RV Parks, Hotels, Lodges, Motels, and Resorts; Local Resources; Useful Maps and Other Publications.
For readers ready to hit the trail, this is the take along, can't-do-without guide. For armchair travelers, it's 57 journeys into wonderland.
