Meditations of Henry David Thoreau
See details
Meditations of Henry David Thoreau
Chris Highland

When Henry David Thoreau died at the age of forty-four in 1862, he had written a forest of articles and essays that eventually earned him a reputation as a first-rate naturalist, conservationist, and social critic. His gravesite in Concord, Massachusetts, is a pilgrimage site for readers who still turn to Walden, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, Maine Woods, "Civil Disobediance," and "Walking" for inspiration. Thoreau was a supreme articulator of America's conscience when the country was industrializing, facing battle over slavery, and developing its public education system. His thoughts are brook-clear and strangely prescient today.

Chris Highland has chosen 60 thoughtful Thoreau quotations and placed them alongside the wisdom words of writers, philosopohers, and teachers from around the world. Bound in a lovely and compact format, the book totes easily along in your pocket, backpack, or picnic basket. Solitude never felt so cozy.

Meditations of Ralph Waldo Emerson

Meditations of Ralph Waldo Emerson
Chris Highland

Ralph Waldo Emerson's groundbreaking 1844 "Nature" essay influenced thinkers as disparate as Nietzsche, Thoreau, and Darwin, and his later writings seem to anticipate future discoveries in physics and psychology, as well as biology. Meditations of Ralph Waldo Emerson is a journey into the mind and heart of this great 19th century author, poet, and philosopher whose writings remain relevant and inspiring today.

In this compact book, 60 selections from 30 years of his writings reveal the essence of Emerson's spiritual vision. Like his friends John Muir and Henry David Thoreau, Emerson saw images of the divine in the natural world, and rather than seeking to conquer wilderness, sought inspiration from it.

Complementing each passage is an inspirational quote from historical and comtemporary luminaries including Margaret Fuller, the Dalai Lama, and Jack Kerouac, and voices from Taoism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sufism.

Meditations of Walt Whitman

Meditations of Walt Whitman
Chris Highland

In revising Leaves of Grass for its 1856 edition, Walt Whitman sacrificed the large pages of the first edition, meant to accommodate his long lines of verse, for smaller pages, with the idea that the reader would be able to enjoy the "ideal pleasure": "to put a book in your pocket and off to the seashore or the forest." It is with this same ideal in mind that Chris Highland has assembled the fourth book in the successful Meditations series, Meditations of Walt Whitman, a pocket-sized compendium of passages from Leaves of Grass. Whitman's lifelong endeavor, Leaves of Grass, is the culmination of his poetic work, published first in 1855, and constantly revised until its last edition in 1881, eleven years before his death. In Meditations of Walt Whitman, passages from Leaves of Grass are paired with the words of a variety of historical and contemporary thinkers, such as Margaret Fuller, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jane Goodall, Mark Twain, Marc Chagall, Helen Keller, Buddha, Dante, and Bhagavad Gita.

One Best Hike: Grand Canyon
Elizabeth Wenk

One of America’s most iconic national parks, and one of the world’s most spectacular places, the Grand Canyon attracts over 4 million visitors a year who visit the canyon and peer over the edge of the abyss. A small number of these tourists leave their cars and trek from the rim to the banks of the Colorado River on one of the best-known hikes in the country.

On the journey hikers take a "geologic journey through time" and pass layers of colored rock and surreal formations that make the canyon so picturesque. Some of these hikers are adequately prepared for the rigors of what can be a dangerous journey. Many are not, and the trip can be deadly. The most popular route into the canyon is from the South Rim on the 16.2-mile round-trip hike descending the South Kaibab Trail to the Colorado River at Bright Angel Campground and ascending the Bright Angel Trail, with an elevation gain and loss of more than 9000 feet round trip.

Although the hike is non-technical, following well-graded trail the whole way, would-be hikers need to be prepared for extreme heat in summer and icy conditions in winter, elevation gain, and other potential dangers before they embark on this trip. Author and seasoned Southwest hiker Elizabeth Wenk provides the authoritative, step-by-step guide to planning and completing this superb excursion with safety advice, insider information, detail, and reassurance found nowhere else.

One Best Hike: Yosemite's Half Dome, 2ed.

One Best Hike: Yosemite's Half Dome, 2ed.
Rick Deutsch

This indispensable guide ensures hikers a fun and safe trip up Yosemite's signature landmark, Half Dome.

This is the only dedicated guide for hiking to the top of Half Dome - the iconic landmark of Yosemite National Park, CA. The focus of the nearly 200-page text is to provide information on safe hiking practices to complete this extremely strenuous hike of 16-miles round trip. It is climaxed by a harrowing 400-foot vertical ascent to the top of the 8,842-foot high granite monolith. Although it was originally felt to be impossible to get to the top, the 1875 ascent by George Anderson led the way for the hundreds of thousands that have followed.

The book begins with a simple explanation on how the unique geological formations arose from ancient magma flows. This provides the reader with an understanding of what happened to the “missing part” of Half Dome. The story of the original inhabitants of the area and the interaction of the Miwok and Mono Paiute Indians with the hordes of white settlers during California’s Gold Rush is presented. This is followed with descriptions of the gear needed to hike comfortably and safely. This includes a boots/foot care, use of hiking poles, water filter usage, clothing selection and food suggestions.

The full day hike up to the top of Half Dome is one of the most popular in the country. It is not easy. Education, preparation and motivation are pre-requisites.  Over 100 photographs and descriptions of salient features take the apprehension out of doing the hike. Descriptions of 18-Points of Interest – waterfalls, historical areas, flora and fauna, drinking water sources and the actual cables provide readers with the “real deal.” GPS points, elevation, distance and estimated arrival times are listed. The small format of the book allows it to be taken along for reference.

The author (aka Mr Half Dome) has completed this hike over 40 times and is a recognized expert source of information about the hike. The Half Dome trek is both a goal and a journey. The magnificent views from the top are worth the 10-12 hours it takes round-trip. The book gives in-depth guidance to help novices and seasoned hikers alike check off a “bucket list” item. Even non-hikers enjoy the many historical vignettes that bring life to events of the mid-1800’s.

The book is capped with extensive appendices listing all the major events in the history of Yosemite since it was discovered in 1851 as well as safety concerns.

The foreword is written by Royal Robbins, the first man to climb the face of Half Dome in 1957.

*NOTE: Permits are required to hike Half Dome. The cable system is up from late May through early October.

Sex in a Tent
Michelle Waitzman

Couples going into the wild usually expect to tough it out, not to get it on. But people also go outside to seek adventure, excitement, mystery, and spontaneity—some of the same qualities also found in great sex.

Sex in a Tent is a mostly fun, sometimes serious guide to love, sex, and adventure in the great outdoors. In this penetrating look at what really goes on behind the tent flap, expert camper and outdoor love-maker Michelle Waitzman reveals everything you need to know to fulfill your wild fantasies.

Like an outdoor guide with her own special territory, Michelle has years of experience “playing the field” in the backcountry, and this book is full of her tricks. Showing you the best positions for campers (the tent tango), to recipes for a romantic meal in a Ziploc bag, to how to look and feel sexy when you’re wearing grimy zip-off hiking shorts and haven’t bathed in days (hint: zip ’em off and go skinny-dipping), she inspires you to leave behind the boring bed sheets and crawl into a tantalizing tent.

For those who don’t fancy a boink in the backcountry, this book covers other types of outdoor adventures for inspired coupling, such as paddling to your own fantasy island, making car camping the ultimate drive-in, or turning the woods into your outdoor bedroom.

Filled with illustrations, positions, games, tricks, and stories from dozens of outdoor lovers, this book will expose you to orgasmic opportunities for love, sex, and adventure in the great outdoors.

The Wisdom of John Muir

The Wisdom of John Muir
Anne Rowthorn

100+ Selections from the Letters, Journals, and Essays of the Great Naturalist

The Wisdom of John Muir: 100+ Selections from the Diaries, Journals, and Essays of the Great Naturalist marries the best aspects of a Muir anthology with the best aspects of a Muir biography. The fact that it is neither, and yet it is both, distinguishes this book from the many extant books on John Muir.

Building on her lifelong passion for the work and philosophy of John Muir, author Anne Rowthorn has created this entirely new treatment for showcasing the great naturalist's philosophy and writings. By pairing carefully selected material from various stages of Muir's life, Rowthorn's book provides a view into the experiences, places, and people that inspired and informed Muir's words and beliefs. The reader feels able to join in with Muir's own discoveries and transformations over the arc of his life. Rowthorn is careful not to overstep her role, in that she stands back and lets Muir's words speak for themselves.
