Jim Leff

Jim Leff has been a columnist for Newsday, New York Press, Brooklyn Bridge, and the legendary food ‘zine Down the Hatch. He's written for Wine and Spirits, Time Out, NetGuide, most of the country's beer magazines. Leff authored the nightlife section--and half of the restaurant reviews--for Macmillan's Unofficial Guide to New York City, and his travel essays appear in Travelers' Tales: Food and Travelers' Tales: Japan, both published by O'Reilly. He's a frequent guest on Arthur Schwartz's "Food Talk" radio show and has appeared on the nationally broadcast television show, Freedom Speaks, as well as numerous other radio and television appearances. The New York Times' Eric Asimov finds Leff "unsurpassed in discovering unusual restaurants in every corner of the city." Doubleday author Anya Von Bremzen calls him "the godfather of the New York underground food scene," and Simple Cooking author John Thorne praises Leff's work as "must reading for anyone . . . wanting to read some of the best food writing on the continent."In his other career as a jazz trombonist, Leff has played and eaten his way through 19 countries on 5 continents (El Pais, the national newspaper of Spain, has dubbed him "The Iron Lung"--a compliment in Spanish, apparently). And everywhere he's roamed, Leff's picked up valuable chow know-how. Back home in his native New York, Leff has amassed encyclopedic knowledge of the best restaurants in the area while darting to gigs and rehearsals in his chowmobile.
