For Authors Who Want to Write a Book

Wilderness Press is always looking for new authors with exciting ideas and a passion for the outdoors. Most of our titles are destination guidebooks for hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and other self-propelled outdoor activities, but we also publish numerous outdoor-related how-to guides. While our general focus is on the Western States—from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific, we are also seeking proposals for destinations across North America. We do not publish fiction, poetry, or memoirs.

Wilderness Press enjoys an outstanding reputation for the quality, accuracy, and completeness of the books we publish, a reputation built over almost 40 years. In our guidebooks, all trip information is collected firsthand: authors travel every mile they write about, each book includes complete and accurate maps, and photographs provided by the author are included in every book.

Creating a book is a challenging, time-consuming, yet extremely rewarding project. Here at Wilderness Press, we have very supportive relationships with our authors. We offer an initial advance against royalties, competitive royalty rates, and a great working relationship—we work with our authors to polish prose, not rewrite it. Interested? For Self-Published Authors and Small Publishers

Wilderness Press selectively distributes books and maps that cover activities and geographic regions that are complementary to those in our catalog. We currently distribute for more than a dozen other publishers. If you have self-published a book and would like to have it distributed nationally, or if you are a small publisher looking to work with someone to get your books into the trade easily, without hassle, and with marketing and pr support, we encourage you to e-mail us information about your titles and we'll start from there!
