Paul Brown: The Rise and Fall and Rise Again of Football's Most Innovative Coach (Hardcover)
Andrew O'Toole

Paul Brown is a football legend, yet few fans know the story of this very private man. This book follows Brown’s life and career, from his childhood and college years through his domination as a coach on every major level — high school, collegiate, and pro — to his painful exile from a sport he essentially helped create. In relating the story of Paul Brown and his gridiron innovations, Andrew O’Toole tells the story of modern day football.

Paul Brown ranks as one of the greatest of football coaches in history Considered the "father of the modern offense," Brown dominated as a gridiron general on every major level — high school (Massillon HS - from "Go, Tigers"), college (Ohio State), and professional (Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals).

Brown gained his reputation as an innovator during his time in Cleveland. He was the first to use intelligence tests to judge players, establish a film library, instruct players in a classroom setting, attempt to use a radio transmitter to communicate with players on the field, and install face masks on helmets.

He was also a person known for his stubborn approach to criticism. Brown was honored in 1967 by his election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. In addition to that accolade, two stadiums bear his name: Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon, and Paul Brown Stadium, current home of the Bengals. Indirectly, a third stadium bears his name: Cleveland Browns Stadium. Learn more about Paul Brown in this book. Grab a copy today, settle in your favorite easy chair and get the facts about one of football's greatest coaches.

The Wire-to-Wire Reds
John Erardi and Joel Luckhaupt

They were a one-year wonder, but what a year. The 1990 Cincinnati Reds stunned the baseball world by winning the National League pennant and then sweeping the heavily favored Oakland A’s in the World Series. The Reds held first place from game one through the final game—becoming one of only three wire-to-wire champions in major league history.

Perhaps even more surprisingly, the story of this colorful team has never been told before in a book. In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of this historic achievement, The Wire-to-Wire Reds brings back the memories with original interviews, more than one hundred photos, and riveting storytelling by award-winning Cincinnati Enquirer columnist John Erardi and blog-master Joel Luckhaupt. With a foreword by Hall of Fame Reds announcer Marty Brennaman,

The Wire-to-Wire Reds is the ultimate keepsake for fans throughout Reds Country.

Winning in the Trenches
Forrest Gregg with Andrew O'Toole

Winning in the Trenches provides a fascinating glimpse of a bygone era in professional football from one of the players who epitomized it. With candor, insight, and love for the game, Forrest Gregg takes the reader through a career that began in the mid-1950s when he was draft by the then-moribund Green Bay Packers. The NFL was a far different, and far less glamorous, place in those years. But, as Gregg tells it, things changed for the better when the team hired a new head coach, the now immortal Vince Lombardi.

Gregg provides many colorful stories of the Lombardi years, during which the Packers dominated the sport, becoming what many experts call the greatest team of all time, winning a number of NFL championships and the first two Super Bowls. Though those teams were loaded with Hall of Famers, Lombardi famously called Gregg "the finest player I ever coached." Lombardi moved on by the end of the 1960s, as did Gregg, who played in yet another Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys before retiring as one of the greatest offensive linemen in the history of the game.

His love for the game wouldn't allow him to rest on his laurels, and Gregg moved into coaching, as an assistant with the San Diego Chargers and then the Cleveland Browns, who promoted him to head coach in the mid 1970s. Gregg is candid yet fair in his recollection of working with the Browns' controversial owner Art Modell. From that post, Gregg moved on to work for another controversial and demanding owner, Paul Brown of the Cincinnati Bengals. Within two years Gregg took that losing franchise all the way to the Super Bowl, winning the NFL's Coach of the Year award.

But Green Bay was his true love, and Gregg returned to the Packers as the head coach. Controversy, however, dogged him, as several of his players were involved in off-the-field scandals, leading to an explosive tenure of several years.

Gregg covers all these years and even his return to SMU, his alma mater, with the directness, honesty, and fairness that make him one of the most admired men ever to play the game. Winning in the Trenches tells the Forrest Gregg story for the first time and will delight fans and students of the game.

Cincinnati's Crosley Field: The Illustrated History of a Classic Ballpark
John Erardi and Joel Luckhaupt

Cincinnati's Crosley Field presents the field's history through text and more than 150 photographs. The Cincinnati Reds played at Crosley Field from 1912 through 1970, and the ballpark holds an iconic place in the city's history as well as throughout Reds Country. One of the most beloved ballparks in Major League history, Crosley Field played host to the first night game and the first of Johnny Vander Meer's back-to-back no-hitters, as well as four World Series and two All-Star games.

Greg Rhodes and John Erardi also present the great Negro Leagues teams that played at Crosley, as well as the field's many colorful characters, such as longtime announcer Waite Hoyt and the top-hatted vendor known as Peanut Jim. In April 2009, the Reds' Hall of Fame and Museum opens this season's key exhibit, Crosley Field Remembered, and Cincinnati's Crosley Field will be sold at the team's gift shop as a souvenir.

In the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust, the Truman White House led the effort to establish the state of Israel. But, was it inevitable that the U.S. would endorse the concept of a Jewish state? Was U.S. policy entirely pro-Jewish? To what extent did the State Department influence Presidents Roosevelt and Truman in regard to Palestine? How aware were the two presidents of the probable consequences of their decisions about the Middle East? A Calculated Risk explores these questions and more.

It examines the intricate international diplomacy that helped pave the way for the creation of the Jewish state and evaluates the conflicting pressures brought to bear on the U.S. with respect to the Palestine question, and specifically the recognition of Israel, from 1942-1948. Impartial, well researched, and highly readable, it tells the complete story of the balancing act that changed the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East. This book is a must-have for veterans and history buffs alike.

In the end, Tim Donaghy returns to the redemptive power of telling the truth about his experiences, his addictions, and his insight into what happened on and off the court. An unforgettable page-turner, this book will confirm readers' suspicions about the influence of the front offices of major league sports, the corrosive power of money, fame and power, and needing to heed the inner voice of right and wrong.
