Submitting
a Proposal to Wilderness Press
Cover letter: Tell
us about yourself and what you propose to write about, and list
any previously published books. Convince us that you have the background
and the qualifications to write a book on this
subject. Include a competitive analysis of similar
books that have been written about the area or subject your book
covers. How would your book be different? Who is the target audience?
How much time do you need to complete the project?
If possible, include information such as the number of visitors
to the relevant area(s) and sales of competing books. Since our
goal is to sell books, not merely have them printed and sit on a
shelf, tell us about any relevant contacts or connections
you may have who might be useful in getting the word out about your
book. How willing are you to help promote the book after it is published?
What to submit: Along
with the cover letter, send us an outline (table of contents) and
synopsis of one or two sample chapters, if they exist. The material
you send us should demonstrate your command of the subject and your
writing ability. If you are proposing a guidebook, include at least
one trip or place description.
Maps: If your book
is a guidebook, it will need maps. If we agree to publish your guidebook,
we will have extensive discussions with you about its maps. We’re
always extra-impressed by authors who have the skills to create
final or near-final maps. Before we agree to publish your book,
we will likely ask you to provide a sample map.
Images: Most of our
books need some visuals, most often photos. Our authors are responsible
for acquiring the visual elements. If we are interested in your
proposal, please be prepared to submit sample images or illustrations.
High-resolution digital photos usually work just fine for interior
images.
How to submit your proposal:
If you are unsure about your project’s suitability
for Wilderness Press, please email us questions, but please don’t
include attachments. We will do our best to get back to you in a
timely fashion. Please mail completed proposals
